Alternative Giving

The Middle Octorara Mission Team is offering alternative gift giving to support an effort to bring fresh water to the Amazon Village of Tamshiyacu.  The Presbyterian Church in this village was constructed with funds from Middle Octorara, and for several years the Mission Team has been involved in summer projects there.  The need for pure water is great and can be provided through a program called "Living Waters for the World."  The alternative giving funds will be set aside for the pure water initiative.
Alternative gift giving is for the persons who have everything.  If you have these "hard to buy for" persons on your list, whatever the occasion, this may just be the answer.  For your donation to the Middle Octorara Mission Fund you will receive a gift card to give to that special someone.  The decorative card will state that "A donation of _________ was made in your name to the Middle Octorara Mission Fund for a clean water system for the Village of Tamshiyacu, Peru, on the Amazon River."

You may order by mail to:  Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, PA 17566 with a notation on the envelope Peru Clean Water System.

June 2007 opened the opportunity for several members of Middle Octorara Church to travel to Peru on a mission trip through Medical Missions.

This trip took us to Iquitos, where we traveled daily up the Amazon River to Tamshiyacu village to do repair work on the Presbyterian Church located there. Pastor Ricardo and his congregation were holding church in a very old building full of termite and moisture damage. When we had done all we could with the tools and supplies available, we then put up walls for a family of the church who were living in a house with only a roof. Upon our return home, we talked about the need for a new church building for the wonderful people we met there. Through the grace of God, Middle Octorara Church members decided to make a new church building possible for our brothers and sisters in Tamshiyacu.

June 2008 took us back to dig the foundation for the new building which will be completed this year. July 2009 we will return to do God’s work as a sister church to Tamshiyacu Presbyterian Church on the Amazon River.

MIDDLE OCTORARA CONTINUES MISSION

July 2009

Middle Octorara provided the funds to build a Presbyterian Church in the village of Tamshiyacu  along the Amazon River .  Middle Octorara is a Sister Church to the Tamshiyacu Congregation thanks to private donations – not money from the church accounts.  During the summer of 2008, several members of the Middle Octorara Congregation participated in a mission trip during which they helped dig the foundation for the new church.  The 2009 group were privileged to attend the dedication of the new church.  They were greeted warmly by Pastor Ricardo, his wife Lupe, many church members, and dozens of children.  They were very grateful for supplies brought by the mission team and want to thank the Middle Octorara Congregation for the kindness.  The supplies are being distributed throughout the community.

Middle Octorara’s participation is through the Presbyterian organization, Medical Missions.  The Amazon Mission Fellowship conducts the efforts of Medical Mission and Sister Churches as per the eight Presbyterian Churches along the Amazon near Iquitos .  Five of the eight now have Sister Churches who provide funds each month.

The Peru Mission Team this year included Dan and Boni Henry, Virgil Roark, Barry Girvin, Jeff and Kathy Evans, and Jodie Miller.     They were joined by six others from First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson City, Missouri .  Rev. Dave Henry led that group.  He is a son of Middle Octorara, a brother of Dan and Doug Henry, and the son of Betty Henry and the late Roy Henry.

The manual labor this year consisted of building a fence (205 feet) around the SCOTA (Special Children of the Amazon) School which is located next to the new church.  Most rewarding was the interaction with the people of Tamshiyacu, particularly the children.  The women of the Peru Mission Team held Bible School (with the help of our interpreter) each day – Monday through Thursday.  By Thursday, 92 kids attended.  Special moments with the children also included playing soccer and many picture-taking experiences.  According to Barry Girvin who was making his first trip to Peru, “When one sees how grateful the people are for our help, the love of the Lord that is evident in their worship, and how happy they are in spite of meager living conditions; the servant is served.  I will never be the same person and I came away with a new appreciation for the life that I am privileged to lead.”

God has greatly blessed Middle Octorara and through Him, He has helped us to bless others.

Medical Missions, Inc. has ministries in Peru, Africa, Mexico, Brazil and Costa Rica.  It is through Medical Missions, Inc. that we are financing the building of the church in Tamshiyacu.  Because Medical Missions, Inc. is more in the construction/infrastructure business than in managing the ministry, Amazon Mission Fellowship was formed to fill the ministry need.  We were approached by AMF to support the ministry at Tamshiyacu as a "sister church".  The request for $200 a month to support Pastor Ricardo's work was reduced by half when Dave Henry's church, First Presbyterian Church of Missouri, agreed to provide $100 a month.  Our committee did not feel that we should participate in this effort with endowment funds.  Therefore, we are providing the opportunity for individuals in the church and community to support the program by donating $100 per year.  We now have nine responses-nine months covered.
