                                                                  Covenanter Scottish Festival

On Saturday, September 6, the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation will sponsor a Covenanter Scottish Festival on the grounds of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (1199 Valley Road) and the Octorara Covenanter (United Presbyterian) Church.  Both churches are located on route 372 one mile west of Green Tree – Middle Octorara on the south side and the Covenanter Church on the north side of the road.

Free parking will be available at the Bart Fire House in Georgetown with shuttle service, and limited parking will be provided at Middle Octorara.  Please use the east entrance to Middle Octorara.  Bart Township Fire Police will be on duty along route 372 and at the fire house.

The event will be a celebration of our Scottish heritage with Scottish Clan tents and vendors located at Middle Octorara and music throughout the day.  The Festival will open at 9:30 AM and feature an opening ceremony at 10:15 AM with remarks by State Representative Bryan Cutler.

The ceremony will continue with performances by the Washington Memorial Pipe Band and dancers from the Campbell School of Highland Dance.

At Middle Octorara, the featured band, Fire in the Glen, will perform  at 11:00 AM and Scottish folk singer and multi-instrumentalist Carl Peterson and singer/songwriter Oliver Mcelhone will perform from 1:00 PM t0 3:00 PM.  There will be children’s games on the lawn east of Middle Octorara Church from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM.  Starting at 1:30 PM, Joshua Walters will demonstrate various Highland Games.

From 11:30AM to 1:30 PM,  there will be a Scottish cooking demonstration featuring Cocka’leekie soup.

Son’s will offer a variety of food items, and refreshment stands will be replete with a variety of beverages.  Halves of chicken will be provided by Nick’s Chicks and Hess’ famous pork barbecue sandwiches will also be on sale.

Living history tours of the Covenanter Church and schoolroom will be conducted throughout the day and tasting of Scottish cheese will be available on the grounds of the Old Church.

At 3:00 PM, a memorial procession will proceed from Middle Octorara to the Covenanter cemetery to honor a Revolutionary War soldier.   Aided by the Washington Memorial Pipe Band and Boy Scout Troop 87, Foundation Board members Barry Girvin and Rev. Douglas Hileman will perform the wreath laying ceremony.

Please come and help honor our Scottish heritage and support the efforts of the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation to preserve and restore the Covenanter Church and schoolroom.  For the cost of admission you receive a full day of first class entertainment, a step into the wonders of our past, and the satisfaction of contributing to the restoration of the Old Church and school room.  The Church is the oldest Covenanter Presbyterian Congregation in North America (1754), and the school room was added in 1873 as an academy.  The building housed Bart Township High School from 1903 to 1927.  Goals:  Develop the school room into a museum showcasing hundreds of local history artifacts, restore the Church and have it listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, and encourage public use of both facilities.

Admission for adults will be $10 and $5 for children ages six to twelve.
